Andrew Braun, a janitorial supply salesman and former synagogue administrator, died Tuesday at Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital Center. The Owings Mills resident was 85.

Mr. Braun was born in Budapest, Hungary, and in 1927 moved with his mother and twin brother to Cleveland, where his father was a physician.

He was a 1941 graduate of Glenville High School in Cleveland and began his college studies at Ohio State University.

Mr. Braun left college in 1942 and enlisted in the Navy, where he served stateside with the medical corps.

After the war, he returned to college and earned a bachelor's degree in English from Case Western Reserve University.

He owned and operated Andrew Braun's Men's Store in Cleveland before moving to Baltimore in 1965, when he became a synagogue administrator at Har Sinai Congregation. Several years later, he took a similar job at Beth El Synagogue.

In 1977, he became a life insurance salesman, and for the past five years, was a salesman for United Sanitary Chemical Co., a Baltimore wholesaler of janitorial and industrial cleaning supplies.

"He was still making calls to clients from his hospital bed," said his son, Steven R. Braun of Reisterstown.

Mr. Braun enjoyed vacationing at a time-share condominium in Lake Placid, N.Y. He also was an avid gardener and Scrabble player.

Still physically active, Mr. Braun competed in the Senior Olympics as a shot-putter and golfer.

Services were held Thursday in the chapel at Beth El Synagogue, 8101 Park Heights Ave.

Also surviving are his wife of 29 years, the former Eleanor Marx; a daughter, Ann Braun Johnson of Peekskill, N.Y.; a stepson, Rick Rutstein of San Diego; two stepdaughters, Sonia Rutstein of Baltimore and Cynthia Visvikis of Seattle; a brother, Dr. Richard Braun of Los Angeles; and eight grandchildren. His first marriage, to the former Vivian Darnovsky, ended in divorce.
