Conservation banquet to honor Stevens family

The Harford Soil Conservation District recently honored the Stevens family of Street as the 2008 Cooperator of the Year at its annual Conservation Awards Banquet. The Stevenses own and operate Mine Branch Farm, a 100-acre beef and grain operation that has been in the family for three generations.

Conservation on the farm began in the 1930s, when the family installed some of the first contour strips in Harford County to prevent erosion on the farm's sloping hills. They also worked closely with the Harford Soil Conservation District to install numerous livestock conservation practices to protect a small stream that flows to Deer Creek.
