Aniston helps sometime boyfriend Mayer mark his 31st birthday

John Mayer and his not-quite-on-again girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, were among those celebrating his 31st birthday Wednesday night, according to Us magazine, as posted on its Web site.

The relaxed pair hung out on a private outdoor patio for several hours late in the evening. Mayer, at one point, affectionately stroked Aniston's hair.

Aniston, 39, and Mayer split in August after dating four months.

It's not clear where things stand. TMZ reported they're not officially back together, although they've been spotted on several dates lately. Stay tuned.

Tuning in

Baltimoreans continued to pay attention to the presidential campaign joining Washington and St. Louis as the cities drawing the largest number of viewers to Wednesday night's debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, according to Nielsen Media Research.

While the debate had smaller numbers than last week's 63.2 million viewers, Nielsen's overnight meters in the 56 top markets nationally estimated the audience would prove to be between 57 million and 58 million viewers.

Although the debate was carried on a number of broadcast and cable outlets, it was not carried by Fox, which aired the baseball playoff game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Well, that was fast

After just two months, Saturday Night Live alumnus Chris Kattan and his wife, model Sunshine Tutt, have split, reports People magazine on its Web site.

Kattan, 37, and Tutt, 32, married in Yosemite National Park on June 28. They filed for divorce in August citing "irreconcilable differences."

The divorce will become final in February, after a six-month waiting period.

Nothing to worry about

Alfred E. Neuman, the grinning face with the flapping ears, has gazed out from the covers of MAD magazine for half a century - becoming such a familiar presence that Charles, Prince of Wales, may have felt it necessary to deny that he looked like him.

The heir to the British throne, then 9 years old, apparently sent a letter to that effect in 1958. On Buckingham Palace stationery and mailed from a nearby post office, it was published in MAD's letters column.

Now a last batch of original drawings of Alfred and other early works are being put up for auction by the magazine.

The sale is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas and online. A preview exhibition of the 36 items to be sold will be held at New York's Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art on Oct. 29.

MAD, founded by William Gaines and Harvey Kurzman, became widely popular for its mix of zany, absurdist and irreverent humor - especially its devastating parodies of Hollywood films.
