On his fourth voyage, storms caught Columbus at Isla Bastimentos, off Panama. "For a day and a night," he wrote in Cecil Jane's translation, "the lightning darted forth in such flashes that I wondered every moment whether it had destroyed my masts and sails. All this while the water from heaven never ceased ... a second universal deluge. The crews ... longed for death as a release."
