Porter had surgery on the wrist and the Saints decided yesterday afternoon to place him on injured reserve, team officials told the Associated Press.
Porter hurt the wrist while attempting to defend a desperation heave by Minnesota's Gus Frerotte. Bernard Berrian caught the pass for the tying touchdown as he collided with teammate Aundrae Allison, Porter and Saints safety Josh Bullocks near the goal line. The Vikings went on to win, 30-27.
Porter was the Saints' second-round draft pick in the spring and won the starting job in training camp. Through the first five games of the season, he has been credited with 25 tackles, including a sack, to go with one interception and five passes defended
Ravens: : Coach John Harbaugh confirmed that nose tackle Kelly Gregg will be placed on injured reserve. Gregg had surgery on his left knee yesterday. "With this surgery, he's got a chance for his career to be fine," Harbaugh said on his WBAL radio show. Harbaugh also said offensive tackle Adam Terry (meniscus issue in his knee) and cornerback Fabian Washington (dislocated shoulder) are considered day-to-day.
Bengals:: The NFL suspended reserve linebacker Darryl Blackstock for the next four games because he used a performance-enhancing substance. Cincinnati signed Blackstock as a free agent from Arizona in the offseason. He has played in all five games, including one start, and has four tackles. The fourth-year player said in a statement that one of his nutritional supplements contained an ingredient banned by the league. " The Bengals also re-signed running back Kenny Watson, who was released Saturday when they needed to open a roster spot for receiver Chris Henry. Watson carried seven times for 32 yards in the first four games, when he was Chris Perry's backup.
Steelers:: Kicker Jeff Reed probably won't miss any games because of a groin injury he suffered in a win over Jacksonville on Sunday night. Pittsburgh is off this week, and Reed said he should be fine for the Oct. 19 game at Cincinnati.
Packers: : Green Bay released linebacker Tracy White and signed rookie linebacker Danny Lansanah from the practice squad. White, a sixth-year player, appeared in 32 regular-season games and two playoff games for Green Bay. Lansanah signed with the Packers as a nondrafted free agent from Connecticut.
Bills:: Defensive end Aaron Schobel missed practice and will be one of numerous regulars using the bye week to recuperate from nagging injuries. Buffalo's top pass rusher said he has a strained ligament in his left foot and doesn't expect to practice much, if it all, during the break. Quarterback Trent Edwards was absent from practice after he was sent home by the team to continue recovering from a concussion he suffered three plays into the game against Arizona.
