Baltimore fall cleanup planned for Oct. 18

The deadline is approaching for city communities to participate in Mayor Sheila Dixon's Fall Harvest Cleaning and Greening. The event, scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Oct. 18, will focus on how communities can transform dumping sites into green urban spaces, including future Adopt-A-Lot gardens. For neighborhoods that sign up to participate, the Department of Public Works will provide brooms, rakes and bags for volunteers to clean up and remove debris. The sign-up deadline is Oct. 10. Baltimore transportation officials are warning motorists about roadwork around the city that is set to start today and might affect traffic during the day. Temporary lane closures are planned all week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations: Harford Road from Bayonne Avenue to Chesley Avenue for a project focusing on resurfacing, curbs, a bus pad and inlet repair; McLean Boulevard from Westfield Avenue to Laurelton Avenue, for resurfacing; and Rogers Avenue from Park Heights Avenue to Wabash Avenue, for milling and resurfacing. In addition, northbound St. Paul Street from 39th Street to University Parkway is expected to be reduced to one lane from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today as part of a resurfacing project and excavation of the median. Officials say that motorists should watch for temporary "no parking" signs in the areas around the construction and plan extra time for travel.

Man fatally shot in car in Broadway East

An unidentified man was shot last night while seated in a car on a street in the Broadway East community and died a short time later at an area hospital, police said. No arrest had been made and police knew of no motive for the slaying. Shortly after 10 p.m., Eastern District police responding to gunshots fired in the 1700 block of N. Broadway found the victim sitting inside a car, bleeding from at least one bullet wound to the head. Police said the victim was taken by a city Fire Department ambulance to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. Metro Crime Stoppers at 410-276-8888 is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and an indictment in the slaying.

Towson University to test emergency systems

Towson University will test its emergency warning siren and public address system between 12:15 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. today. The system alerts students, faculty and staff in the event of a campuswide emergency. The test is expected to be audible in surrounding neighborhoods. Information: 410-704-4471.

Stevenson University to dedicate 3 buildings

Stevenson University, formerly Villa Julie College, will dedicate three buildings to key figures in its history during its Founders Day celebration at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The student union will be named the Carolyn Manuszak Student Union to honor Villa Julie's president from 1964 to 1999. The Rose Dawson Academic Center will recognize the college's former academic dean, who served from 1965 to 1999. The Learning Resource Center will become the Villa Julie Administration Building to honor the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who founded the college. The university inaugurated Founders Day in 2007 to mark the opening of Villa Julie on Oct. 1, 1947. The board of trustees voted in June to change the name to Stevenson University. Maryland woman killed in Delaware collision

HARRINGTON, Del.: Police say a Maryland woman was killed and six others injured when the car in which she was riding collided with another on a wet road. Rosa Gutierrez, 26, of Annapolis was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday night. She was riding in the front seat of a 1997 Honda Accord driven by Jose Manzanares, 26, of Annapolis. Police say the Honda was headed east on Delaware Route 14 when it slid on a curve and spun into the oncoming lane, where it was hit by a Nissan Pathfinder carrying five people. The driver was of the Nissan was taken to the hospital with a serious leg injury, while the passengers were treated for minor injuries. Manzanares was charged with death by motor vehicle and careless driving.
