John H. "Pete" Peterson Sr., marketing manager

John Hawley "Pete" Peterson Sr., a retired sales and marketing manager and a sailor who enjoyed cruising Maine's Penobscot Bay, died Sunday of complications from anemia at the Broadmead retirement community in Cockeysville. He was 87.

Mr. Peterson was born in New York City and raised in Larchmont, N.Y. He was a 1940 graduate of the Mount Hermon School, now Northfield Mount Hermon School, in Mount Hermon, Mass.

After earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1944 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, he served with the Army Corps of Engineers aboard the USS Lyman, a hopper dredge, in Manila, the Philippines.

At the time of his discharge with the rank of captain in 1946, he was with the Army Intelligence Corps at Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Mr. Peterson came to Baltimore in 1947 when he went to work for Anchor Post Products. In 1956, he joined the metal products division of the Koppers Co. in Glen Arm.

He was promoted to sales and marketing manager and held this position until retiring in 1982.

In addition to sailing Maine waters, he also participated in ocean racing and competed in racing events in Annapolis.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at Broadmead, 13801 York Road.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Frances Corse; two sons, J. Hawley Peterson Jr. of Timonium and Harvey Peterson of Belfast, Maine; two daughters, Polly Peterson of Towson and Sally Shanklin of Lutherville; a sister, Polly Pringle of West Hartford, Conn.; and two grandchildren.
