If the sitcom genre isn't dead, this is the kind of comedy that will kill it.
That is what I was feeling 10 minutes into the new CBS comedy Gary Unmarried, which premieres tonight. Jay Mohr stars as a recently divorced dad who is having a hard time adjusting to his former wife's new relationship with another man.
So, what does he do? He acts like an adolescent, which is the way all husbands and dads behave in network sitcoms.
As for the last 10 minutes of the pilot, believe me, I would not have hung around had someone not been paying me to do so. (8:30 p.m., CBS) * 1/2
NOT MUCH OF A RIDE Here's a show that typifies the creative bankruptcy of the new network TV season. Knight Rider is yet another remake of a series that wasn't much to begin with, unless you are partial to talking cars. Me, I prefer talking space aliens like ALF, of the late, great 1980s NBC sitcom. I'll even take a talking horse on a bad night of TV. But talking cars leave me cold. (8 p.m., NBC). **
LATE-NIGHT GUESTS John McCain appears on The Late Show With David Letterman (11:35 p.m., CBS). Dr. Phil McGraw visits The Tonight Show With Jay Leno (11:35 p.m., NBC).
