Free weight loss seminar at BW Medical Center
The University of Maryland Center for Weight Management & Wellness will offer a free educational seminar at Baltimore Washington Medical Center at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Courtney Conference Center on the lower level of the Tate Center, 305 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie.
Dr. Mark Kligman will explore a surgical approach to weight loss, an approach recommended only for those ages 18 to 60 who have a body mass index over 40 and those with a BMI between 35 and 40 who also have obesity-related medical complications, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or sleep apnea.

Arundel hospital to hold seminar on fibromyalgia
Anne Arundel Medical Center, in cooperation with the Southern Maryland Arthritis Foundation, will hold a seminar for those suffering from fibromyalgia from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the medical center's Sajak Pavilion.
A panel of experts will explain the condition and discuss ways to improve sufferers' quality of life. There will be an opportunity for questions.

Annapolis Senior Center breast health program
Registration is open for "Girls' Night Out," a free program on breast health for women 40 or older. The program will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at Annapolis Senior Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis.
After a brief presentation on women's breast health, there will be an opportunity to speak with health care professionals and breast cancer survivors. Dinner will be served; exhibits and door prizes are also planned.

Mac's team : A bull roast and auction is scheduled Oct. 19 at Michael's Eighth Avenue to help pay medical costs for Cormac "Mac" Murray, 3, the son of Brian and Aimee Murray of Sykesville. The child has been diagnosed with metachromatic leukodystrophy, a rare disease that affects the nervous system and for which there is no known cure. Art bras : The Anne Arundel County Department of Health and the Annapolis Quilt Guild are accepting entries for the fourth annual Cup of the Month Challenge. Contestants will create Art Bras, which promote breast cancer awareness, screening and treatment. Entry forms and contest rules are available at the Department of Health Web site, www.aahealth.org. There is no cost to enter, but bras must be submitted by Sept. 26. Winning entries will be displayed at county sites later this month through October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Screenings, classes : Baltimore Washington Medical Center is offering the following activities:
* Yoga Nidra classes, for 10 weeks, starting at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. today at the hospital, 300 Hospital Drive in Glen Burnie. The cost is $50. www.bwmc.umms.org.
* Free computerized neck and back screenings, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. tomorrow at the medical center's outreach center at Arundel Mills mall. Dr. Edward Bartlinski will use a painless technology to detect areas of nerve disturbance. Appointments are not required.
* Safe Sitter, a class to train youths ages 11-13 to be baby sitters, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the medical center's Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, 301 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie. The cost is $50. Registration is required; bring a bag lunch. 410-787-4367.
* Free blood pressure screening will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Harundale Presbyterian Church, at Eastway and Guilford Road in Glen Burnie. Reservations are not needed.
* Podiatrist Jenny Nguyen will offer a foot screening and make recommendations for footwear purchases from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sept. 25 at Arundel Mills mall, store No. 407, near mall entrance No. 4. Those with diabetes or wound-related questions are encouraged to attend.
First aid : The American Red Cross will hold a first-aid class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Anne Arundel County Police Department's Southern District station, 35 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater. Support group : The Tate Cancer Center at Baltimore Washington Medical Center offers a bimonthly education and support program for those affected by breast cancer.
