The top-ranked McDonogh girls soccer team wasn't fazed by anything yesterday morning.
Not by the tropical storm that passed through or the talented Sacred Heart team from Louisville, Ky., it was up against.
With a three-goal surge in the first 10 minutes and an impressive three-goal, one-assist performance from freshman midfielder Ashley Spivey, the Eagles came away with a comfortable 5-1 win over their Kentucky opponent in the second day of the McDonogh Tournament. The host team and Pennington, New York, had 2-0 records in the tournament and were set to meet in the championship game, but the persistent rainstorm canceled the final.
McDonogh coach Maurice Boylan Jr. left satisfied with the day's work he received from his group.
"I told the girls this may be our only game of the day, so let's go out and set the tone defensively early and also attack and score some early goals. We did just that with good pace and speed early in the game," he said.
Junior midfielder Rachel Peltz opened the scoring five minutes into the game before senior Gigi Mangione made it 2-0 moments later.
Spivey took over from there. She first took a through ball from Mangione, cut back and scored from 14 yards to make it 3-0 and then closed out the first-half scoring with a strong run and finish in the closing minutes. Her third goal of the game came early in the second half.
"She's so fast and slick with the ball. She's just so dynamic. Whatever word you want to use, she's all that and more," Boylan said.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Lerner, who is splitting time with Ali Brennan, made a diving save on a penalty kick midway through the second half to temporarily preserve the shutout. But Sacred Heart converted on a second penalty kick it was awarded later in the half.
