Ted Hawrylak

The Baltimore Sun

At the Towson Farmers Market, there was one thing cooler than the cucumbers. That would be Baltimore County insurance agent Ted Hawrylak. What you see is what you get with this 51-year-old Catonsville resident. "My style and my attitude are similar; laid back and casual, easy to get along with."

Age: 51

Residence: Catonsville

Job : Insurance agent at the Towson New York Life office

Self-described style : "Bold yet plain. Conservative, yet edgy."

The look : Tommy Bahama lime green shirt. Lucky brand jeans. Black Croc flip-flops. Sterling silver chain necklace. Stainless steel Breitling watch. Maui Jim sunglasses.

Where it came from: He ordered the shirt from the Sierra Trading Post catalog. Both his jeans and flip-flops came from Nordstrom. He bought both the chain and watch on New York's 47th Street, in the city's jewelry district. And his shades came from the Sunglass Hut.

A comprehensive fashion policy : "I may wear my seersucker suit with a pastel blue polo shirt and hear comments such as '[you look like you're from] Miami Vice.' While I understand that this combination would be considered racy by some, it is actually a very conservative, old, country club look. Same for my madras plaid slacks. My normal work attire would be flat front dress slacks with either a collared polo shirt or a button-down shirt similar to the one I am wearing. Dress moccasins with no socks are a must. ... My shoes and belts have to match."

Fair market value : "My favorite shops and favorite brands kind of roll together. I am a single dad. Before my daughter was born, I would spend time in the discount chains as well as Nordstrom, upstairs and downstairs, and the Neiman Marcus and Saks outlets in Arundel Mills mall. These days, if I like a particular brand I will search on the computer for it and peruse the online offerings. Nat Nast, Tommy Bahama, Burma Bibas, Linea Naturale, Diesel, to name a few."

Time to weed: "I have too much old stuff in my closet. In the last few years, I've gained roughly 20 pounds and I think I may lose it someday. My reality is that as I am getting older, I am gaining a few here and there. I absolutely love to cook and eat. Guess getting rid of the older suits, etc., would be officially 'giving up.' "

Mapping out his fashion : "One of my favorite items of clothes is a Nat Nast shirt with the map of Cuba [on it]. I kind of enjoy Cuban cigars, so I kind of get a kick out of the little cigars embroidered in the locations where tobacco is grown."

He says he's just been "outed" : "The dress code [at work] is somewhat formal. I rarely comply, and have that reputation around our office. Our managers are away this week, so I wore super-casual. If this is printed, I'll be busted. It will be a good laugh."
