A 6-year-old boy was wounded yesterday by a stray bullet during a shootout in Northeast Baltimore, police said.
Police received a call about 5 p.m. about a shooting in the 3200 block of Lyndale Ave. at the corner of St. Cloud Avenue in Bel Air-Edison, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman.
The boy, who was one of several children playing in the area at the time of the shooting, was struck once, Moses said. The bullet passed through the upper right side of the boy's chest and did not strike any vital organs, Moses said. His condition was not known, but Moses said the injury was not considered life-threatening.
The child was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital.
At least two people were involved in the gunfire and were seen running from the area. No arrests were made by early evening, but police said they were interviewing several witnesses.
Many of the block's residents were outside on their porches when the shots were fired. Neighbors said the boy lives nearby and was playing football with a group of friends when he was shot.
George Thomas, 55, was on his porch with his young nieces and nephews when he heard several gunshots. He quickly herded the children inside.
"The police was here in a flash," Thomas said. "They must have been in the neighborhood or something."
The block was the scene of a shooting on July 13 when one man was fatally shot in the chest and another was shot in the shoulder.
