It takes three
The Orioles trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the second, and it appeared that a three-game sweep was inevitable. But they scored three times in the inning, four more in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Ramon Hernandez landed the big blow in the third with a three-run homer off David Aardsma. Melvin Mora did the honors in the fourth, depositing a pitch by Javier Lopez into the left-field seats for a three-run shot of his own.
Watching Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz last night, you can hardly believe that the young right-hander no-hit the Orioles less than a year ago. Buchholz allowed five earned runs over 2 1/3 innings. He threw 60 pitches, only 30 for strikes, and allowed three hits and three walks. He has lost seven straight decisions and has given up four earned runs or more in eight of his past 10 appearances.
One strange inning
There wasn't a full moon over Camden Yards, but there probably should have been. The madness started in the top of the third, when the Orioles' ballgirl, thinking that Jed Lowrie's hit was foul, gloved the ball and gave it to a fan. In the bottom of the inning, Mora went from first base to third on a walk to Luke Scott. With the Red Sox's infield playing a shift on Scott, Mora stopped at second briefly after Buchholz threw ball four and then sprinted to third. Three pitches later, Hernandez drove Aardsma's offering over the center-field wall. Trying to make the play, Coco Crisp tumbled over the wall and into the Orioles' bullpen.
The Orioles are off today before beginning a three-game series with the New York Yankees tomorrow night at 7:05. Radhames Liz (4-3, 7.47) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start opposite Yankees right-hander Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.35). Liz has never started against New York, but he has faced the team twice in relief, allowing one earned run in 4 1/3 innings. Mussina has won six of his past seven decisions, with his lone loss during that stretch coming against the Orioles. In two starts this season against his former club, Mussina has allowed 13 runs (seven earned) and 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
