Howard County police yesterday were investigating a head-on collision that killed one person and left five others injured Thursday night.

Milton Stanley Bowens Sr., 64, died after the Ford Explorer he was was driving collided with a BMW on Frederick Road near East Daisy Road in Lisbon, according to police. Bowens, of the 1100 block of Shaffersville Road in the Howard County portion of Mount Airy, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:30 p.m. accident.

The three passengers in the Explorer were hospitalized with injuries: Adrienne Jones, 44, who also lives in the 1100 block of Shaffersville Road; Corin Disney, 16; and Jasmin Disney, 13. Police believe Jones is the mother of the girls but could not confirm an address for the teens.

Jones was listed in serious but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday. Corin Disney, a student at Glenelg High School, was released from Shock Trauma yesterday. Jasmin Disney, who attends Glenwood Middle, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she was listed in good condition yesterday.

The driver of the 2006 BMW, Joel Nathaniel Wareham, 22, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and his passenger, Joshua Booth, 20, of Laytonsville, were released from Shock Trauma yesterday.

Police said the accident occurred when the speeding BMW traveling east on Frederick Road crossed a double yellow line several times as its driver passed cars on the road. At one point, police said, the BMW went into the westbound lane and crashed into the westbound sport utility vehicle.

Police said the impact left the engine of the BMW "sitting in the middle of Frederick Road." Wareham and Booth, neither of whom were wearing seat belts, police said, were thrown from the car.

Neighbors of the quiet, rural street where Bowens and Jones lived reacted with shock yesterday upon hearing of the accident.

"They're very nice neighbors," said Monica Covolesky, who lives across the street from Bowens and said family members have lived on the block for generations.

Family members were gathered on the porch of a home on Bowens' block yesterday afternoon. A man who identified himself as a relative of Bowens' said the family did not wish to comment.
