Emma Belle Wagner, a homemaker and volunteer, died of complications from a stroke Aug. 8 at the Blakehurst retirement community in Towson. She was 88.

Emma Belle Shafer was born at her family's home on Fords Lane and was raised in Northwest Baltimore. She was a 1938 graduate of Friends School and attended Wellesley College.

She volunteered for more than 40 years with Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and had been a board member of the YWCA for 30 years.

"Her main volunteer interest was the Presbyterian Home of Maryland in Towson, where she had served on most of its committees and had been president of its women's board," said her husband of 65 years, Carl E. Wagner Jr., a retired Connecticut General Insurance Co. general agent.

She was a member of Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church for many years and also served as an elder.

The former longtime Roland Park resident moved to Blakehurst in 1993. She enjoyed spending time at a time-share condominium in Tortuga Beach, Fla.

"She collected turtle figurines that were made of wood, glass, silver and other materials," Mr. Wagner said.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Maryland Presbyterian Church, 1105 Providence Road in Towson, where she also was a member.

Mrs. Wagner is also survived by three daughters, Elizabeth A. Wagner of Ipswich, Mass., M. Louise Gibson of Phoenix, Baltimore County, and Barbara C. Wagner of Arlington, Mass.; and two granddaughters.
