The club said Chamberlain (4-3, 2.63 ERA) will rest for about a week before beginning a throwing program.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he had no specifics to report regarding Chamberlain's examination by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. The right-hander was sent to see Andrews after undergoing a magnetic resonance imaging on his ailing right shoulder Tuesday. Chamberlain, 22, was removed from Monday night's start against the Texas Rangers in the fifth inning with stiffness in his shoulder.
New York called up reliever Chris Britton from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Chamberlain on the roster.
* More Yankees Hundreds filled an Oklahoma City-area church for a stirring and often humorous tribute to Bobby Murcer, a five-time All-Star outfielder who died from brain cancer July 12.
* Rockies Colorado got a pair of pitching reinforcements, claiming Livan Hernandez off waivers from the Twins and activating Jeff Francis from the DL. Hernandez, the 1997 World Series Most Valuable Player and a two-time All-Star, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 23 starts before the Twins designated him for assignment Friday. Francis is 3-7 with a 5.67 ERA this season.
* Cardinals Infielder Felipe Lopez, released by the Nationals last week, signed a contract with St. Louis on Tuesday night. Lopez, a 28-year-old switch-hitter, hit .234 with two home runs, 20 doubles and 25 RBIs for the Nationals. The Orioles had held talks with the Nationals last month about acquiring him to play shortstop. Lopez, a 2005 All-Star with the Reds, started 69 games at second base, seven at shortstop and six in left field before being cut loose Friday. St. Louis optioned infielder Brendan Ryan to Triple-A Memphis.
* Rangers Texas' new closer is old-timer Eddie Guardado, still getting hitters out at the age of 37. Guardado (3.02 ERA), who has been the Rangers' most consistent setup man this season, takes over for C.J. Wilson, who was officially placed on the 15-day DL with bone spurs in his left elbow. Wilson (24 saves, 6.02 ERA) had elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2004.
