A number of Baltimore streets will be closed this weekend for events that include a disaster drill at M&T; Bank Stadium, a motorcycle and fashion show, and construction projects, according to the city's Department of Transportation.
The emergency exercise, called Operation Purple Haze, begins at 7 a.m. today and is scheduled to conclude at 3 p.m.
It is sponsored by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, the Baltimore Fire Department and the Ravens and is designed as a mock disaster at Camden Yards or the football stadium.
Sterling Clifford, a city police and mayoral spokesman, said people in the area will notice many fire engines and police cars, though he said loud sirens would be kept to a minium.
"There will be at least one simulated explosion," Clifford said.
The following streets will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
Ostend Street from Scott to Sharp streets; the southbound Russell Street service drive from Hamburg to Ostend streets; the northbound Russell Street service drive from Ostend Street to the ramp; Paca Street from West to Ostend streets; Ridgely Street from West to Ostend streets; Warner Avenue from Stockholm to Ostend streets; West Street from Russell to Paca streets.
Also today, the first block of Preston Street at Charles Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a crane operation.
Transportation officials say a crane will be hoisting construction materials onto the roof of the Sun Trust building. Westbound Preston Street traffic will be detoured north onto Charles Street, west onto Mount Royal Avenue, south onto Maryland Avenue and back to Preston.
Today and tomorrow, Monument Street will be closed from Fallsway to Greenmount Avenue from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for demolition work.
Traffic on eastbound Monument Street will be detoured north onto the Fallsway, east onto Eager Street, south onto Greenmount Avenue and back onto Monument.
Tomorrow, Market Place across from the Inner Harbor will close from Lombard to Water streets 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle and Fashion Show.
