*Dr. Mandeep R. Mehra, chief of cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, has become president of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. The society brings together a wide range of transplant specialists, including cardiologists, heart surgeons, scientists and nurses. Mehra is also a professor of medicine and head of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

*Nurse Tina Beerman, manager of the Howard County General Hospital's Center for Breast Care, is a consumer reviewer who will evaluate about 3,000 proposals for the Breast Cancer Research Program sponsored by the Department of Defense. She joins other scientists who will decide how to spend congressional funding on research. Consumer reviewers represent breast cancer survivors and patients, family members and people at risk for the disease. Beerman is one of 116 consumer advocates participating in this summer's peer review process.

*The American Nurses Credentialing Center has awarded Johns Hopkins Hospital its prestigious Magnet Recognition status for excellence in nursing services. The Magnet Recognition Program highlights quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in nursing practice. Applicants undergo an extensive evaluation, and those who are awarded Magnet status must maintain rigorous standards as part of the four-year designation. Johns Hopkins Hospital first gained Magnet status in 2003 and is one of two hospitals in Maryland to do so.

* Dr. Mohan Suntha has been named the first Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Endowed Professor in Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The endowment supports radiation oncology research. Suntha, a professor of radiation oncology at the school and associate director of clinical affairs at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, will use the funds to further his study methods for treating head, neck and esophageal cancers.
