Rally to honor Phelps and Hoff
A rally will be held at 7:15 p.m. Friday in downtown Towson to honor Baltimore County residents Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff, who are in Beijing to compete on the U.S. Olympic swim team.
Family members, cheerleading squads and sportscasters will be on hand at the Towson Chamber of Commerce's weekly Feet on the Street festival on Allegheny Avenue between York Road and Washington Avenue. The rally is sponsored by County Executive James T. Smith Jr.
Allegheny Avenue will be closed to traffic at 6:30 p.m. for the rally and festival.
Part of Reisterstown Road to close
The State Highway Administration will close two lanes of Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills from Friday night to Aug. 4 while CSX Transportation contractors remove unused railroad tracks.
Reisterstown Road (Route 140) will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Aug. 4 between Owings Mills Boulevard and Strawhat Drive. Crews will work on one side of the road at a time, leaving one lane open in each direction.
SHA officials said motorists should use Interstate 795 as an alternate route if possible and that those who must use Reisterstown Road should allow for extra travel time.
Introduction to Law course set at CCB
The School of Justice at the Community College of Baltimore County will offer its Introduction to Law course as part of a new pre-law program at all three campuses this fall.
The course will provide students with basic information on legal studies, as well as civil, criminal and constitutional law. The program will lead to an associate's degree and is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to earn their bachelor's degree and then seek admission to law school.
Fall classes begin Aug. 25.
Baltimore Hadassah wins national award
Hadassah of Greater Baltimore recently received a national award for overall excellence in women's health programming at the annual convention of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America.
The local chapter's program, Beyond the Mirror, was recognized for its comprehensive effort to promote healthy living and healthy attitudes in girls from elementary school through high school, as well as their mothers.
Hadassah of Greater Baltimore, which is headquartered in Pikesville, will offer Beyond the Mirror this fall.
