*Dr. Emily McCartney is the new director of reconstructive and aesthetic eyelid and facial plastic surgery at Katzen Eye Group.

McCartney recently completed a fellowship in cosmetic and reconstructive oculoplastics at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She has experience in facial plastic surgery, orbital reconstruction, functional eyelid repair, basic/complex oculoplastics and complex facial trauma.

McCartney earned undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri and was chief resident at Indiana University.

*Dr. Brendan J. Collins has joined the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center at Mercy Medical Center. Before Collins came to Mercy, his work included finishing a Johns Hopkins-University of Maryland fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

He earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

*Dr. Kathy J. Helzlsouer has been appointed as chair of the Maryland State Council on Cancer Control by Gov. Martin O'Malley.

Helzlsouer is an oncologist and clinical epidemiologist who also serves as director of the prevention and research center at Mercy Medical Center's Weinberg Center for Women's Health and Medicine.

In this new position, she will be charged with the activities of the cancer control council, a 25-member body appointed by O'Malley. It advises government officials, public and private organizations and the general public on comprehensive policies and programs needed to decrease and control the cancer incidence and mortality rate in Maryland.

Helzlsouer joined Mercy in 2004 to lead the hospital's efforts to broaden the base of knowledge and research in women's health.

She has directed the Cancer Program in the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health and also is an epidemiology professor there. Helzlsouer also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and the PDQ Cancer Screening and Prevention Committee at the National Cancer Institute.
