A four-alarm fire ripped through a commercial building in western Baltimore County last night, fire officials said.
County firefighters responded to the fire at 6730 Whitestone Road in Woodlawn about 9:20 p.m., a fire dispatcher said. She did not know if anyone was inside the building. Crews were still fighting the fire more than an hour later.
The 16,000-square-foot building, built in 1962, is owned by Concrete Protection & Restoration Inc., state property records show.
A witness, John Scott of Baltimore, said he and his wife were heading home when they saw a plume of smoke from Interstate 70. They pulled over in the parking lot of Martin's West and looked across Interstate 695, where a warehouse-like structure was engulfed in flames, Scott said.
At one point, the couple heard a huge explosion, followed by a fireball that shot into the air, Scott said.
"I never saw a fireball," said Scott, 49, of Baltimore's Dickeyville neighborhood. "It was amazing. We could feel the heat."
