Two boys riding an ATV hit by train in Baltimore County

The Baltimore Sun

Two Eastern Baltimore County boys riding an all-terrain vehicle were injured, one seriously, when an Amtrak Acela train hit them last night, authorities said.

Their names and conditions were not released.

About 7:25 p.m., the train, heading from Boston to Washington, was near the 100 block of Earls Road and approaching the Earls Road overpass in Chase when it struck the boys, said Cliff Cole, an Amtrak spokesman in New York.

Cole said the speed limit for the train in that area is 125 mph, but he did not know how fast the train was going.

It also was not known which part of the train struck the boys, Cole said.

A county Fire Department communications officer said one boy might have lost an arm and was taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He said the other youth was taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center with undetermined injuries.

Cole said that the Acela train, which carried 144 passengers, stopped and that a regional train arrived a short time later and took the passengers to Washington.

Cole said the accident is being investigated by Amtrak police.
