A recap of the Orioles' 7-5 win over the Cubs last night:
WISH YOU WERE HERE
As trade rumors swirled this offseason, Brian Roberts figured it was inevitable that he would start the season as a Chicago Cub. But there he was last night, still in an Orioles uniform and putting a hurting on the team that coveted him. Roberts went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple and two runs scored. The triple in the sixth inning was the 1,000th hit of his career. Roberts said before the game that he wasn't sure what the reaction would be from the Wrigley Field crowd. If he continues to hit like this in the series, it surely will be boos.
GUTHRIE GETS HELP
For six innings last night, Jeremy Guthrie looked in complete control against the Cubs' red-hot lineup. He had allowed only a solo homer to Kosuke Fokudome in the fourth inning and got out of trouble by inducing three double plays. But with a 7-1 lead heading into the seventh inning, Guthrie started to get hit around. Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez started the inning with singles, and then Jim Edmonds drilled a three-run homer into the left center-field seats.
SCOTT STARTS IT
The Orioles had done virtually nothing for the first three innings against the Cubs' young lefty, Sean Marshall, but that changed in the fourth. Kevin Millar drew a one-out walk after taking some tough two-strike pitches. Ramon Hernandez followed with a line single to left, his second hit of the game. Luke Scott scored both by slamming a hard liner to right field that went for his first triple of the year.
Orioles' left-hander Brian Burres (6-5, 5.24) will oppose Cubs' veteran left-hander Ted Lilly (7-5, 4.71) in the second game of the series, which gets under way at 8:05 tonight at Wrigley Field. The only hitter on the Cubs' 25-man roster whom Burres has faced is outfielder Reed Johnson, who hasn't played since June 17 because of an ailing back. Lilly, who had pitched for the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays before signing a free agent deal with the Cubs, is 6-2 with a 3.95 ERA in 14 career appearances (12 starts) against the Orioles.
