Mr. Mooney was born in Baltimore and raised in Govans. He was a 1966 graduate of Calvert Hall College High School and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Mount St. Mary's College, now university, in Emmitsburg, where he graduated cum laude in 1970.
He remained an active alumnus at St. Mary's and had been a member of the university's President's Council.
In 1971, he became a certified public accountant and earned a master's degree in business from Loyola College in 1975.
He worked as an auditor until 1976, when he established McBee Associates, a Baltimore consulting firm.
His company was later acquired in 1983 by KPMG LLP, a tax and advisory firm, where was a partner for the past 25 years.
"His career was defined by his impeccable integrity and tireless loyalty to his clients and firm. He built his career as a consultant to health care institutions, advising a range of clients including Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Medical System," said a son, Daniel W. Mooney of New York.
His son added that Mr. Mooney had "played an integral role in the expansion at Hopkins and Maryland for the last two decades" and was respected for his business expertise and sound judgment.
Most recently, KPMG had entrusted him with oversight of the firm's risk-management efforts in addition to his regular practice, his son said.
Mr. Mooney had served as president of the Healthcare Managers Association from 1984 to 1985.
A resident of the Pinehurst section of Baltimore County for 30 years, Mr. Mooney enjoyed playing golf with friends at the Country Club of Maryland, where he was a member.
Mr. Mooney had served in the Army Reserves from 1970 to 1976, and had been the volunteer commissioner for the Kelly Post lacrosse league for a decade.
Mr. Mooney had been a communicant of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 740 N. Calvert St., where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today.
