Volunteer group gets $8,000 grant
The Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County has received $8,000 in grant funding to get more middle school youths involved in community service during the summer.
The Corporation for National and Community Service recently doled out $900,000 to six national and local organizations. The Eastern Seaboard Summer of Service Consortium - of which the Anne Arundel volunteer center is a member - was awarded the largest grant, $200,000.
The funds will be used to strengthen and replicate successful summer youth service programs at 14 volunteer centers and a church in states from New Jersey to Florida.
Fay Mauro, executive director of the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County, said its portion of the money will be spent to incorporate service-learning opportunities in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County 2008 Summer Camp.
"One day a week for six weeks, campers will learn what it is to have fun while helping others," said Latonia Kendrick, chief of program operations for the clubs. "This complements a core Boys & Girls Club program area, Character and Leadership, by encouraging our youth to become more responsible, caring citizens in the community."
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County serves more than 7,000 youths ages 5 to 18 annually.
The Summer of Service initiative is part of the corporation's strategic goal of engaging 3 million youths from disadvantaged circumstances in service by 2010.

Programs to teach house-painting skills
The city of Annapolis will launch the first of two Sherwin Williams Home-Work Paint Training Programs tomorrow through June 27, with a second training class running from July 14 to 25.
Sherwin Williams will cover the cost of the 10-day training program to teach house-painting skills that could lead to opportunities in the construction industry.
"I believe that by developing a lifelong entrepreneurial skill, each participant will leave this course with a refreshed sense of hope, pride, and determination," said Mayor Ellen O. Moyer.
Included will be on-site training, preferably in vacant apartments or town houses, meals, materials and supplies for 15 to 20 trainees in each class. A graduation ceremony will be held on the 10th day.
