Federal prosecutors charged an Owings Mills man with arson yesterday after they say he hired someone to burn down his home to collect insurance money, according to the Maryland U.S. attorney's office.

Keith T. McMahon, 41, of the 2900 block of Caves Road arranged to have his house burned in exchange for $10,000, prosecutors allege in the criminal complaint. Prosecutors say McMahon was having financial trouble and was behind on his mortgage payments.

The house fire occurred in January. One firefighter was injured after falling through the floor and into the home's basement as he and more than 50 others battled the single-alarm blaze in the Caveswood community.

McMahon is scheduled to have a detention hearing today. If convicted, he could face a maximum of 40 years in prison.
