The ramp from southbound Hanover Street to southbound Interstate 95 remained closed yesterday evening and likely will be closed this morning while engineers repair damage from yesterday's early-morning tanker fire, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority police.

The South Baltimore bridge was shut down about 3 a.m. after a tanker-truck overturned on the ramp, leading to traffic delays forcing the Maryland Transit Administration to temporarily shut down the Camden MARC train line between Baltimore and Washington. The trains were running on a limited schedule yesterday evening, and no decision had been made about today's train schedules.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Chief Kevin Cartwright, a Fire Department spokesman, said the truck driver suffered minor injuries when his cab caught fire. The spokesman said the driver, with a company called Petro, kicked out the side-door window and escaped. He was treated at Harbor Hospital and released.

Cartwright said 800 to 1,000 gallons of gasoline spilled on the ramp and that some fell to the ground below and puddled on the train tracks. Another tank did not rupture, but it took several hours to pump the fuel from the wrecked truck to another tanker.

The accident occurred 200 feet from where another tanker crashed in May last year, killing a Dana Transport System driver and sending blazing ethanol onto South Hanover Street.
