Lewis William Ruth, a retired insurance company claims manager who had served in both the Army and Marine Corps, died of lung cancer Friday at his Parkville home. He was 68.
Mr. Ruth was born and raised in Pittsburgh and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He was a mortar man in the Marine Corps from 1959 to 1962, and then enlisted in the Army, where he served as a paratrooper from 1963 to 1966.
For more than 20 years, he was a claims manager for the Traveler's Insurance Co., where he was working at the time of his death.
He was a member of the Baltimore Claims Association.
Mr. Ruth enjoyed attending reunions of his Marine colleagues, and was a member of the Marine Corps Association, Marine Corps League and American Legion Parkville Post 183.
He was an avid lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan and liked to travel.
Mr. Ruth was a parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues Roman Catholic Church, 9400 Old Harford Road, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. today.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Amy Ruth; a son, Marine Capt. Bryan Ruth of Fredericksburg, Va.; two daughters, Kristin Williams of Fallston and Alison Ruth of Parkville; a sister, Lois Chapman of Tacoma, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
