Blue Jays update
The Toronto Blue Jays (32-30) are again in their familiar third-place spot in the American League East. Despite losing their best player, Vernon Wells, to a broken wrist, the Jays have stayed above .500 thanks to a pitching staff that ranks among the AL's best in overall earned run average, starters' ERA and bullpen ERA. The staff is anchored by two seven-game winners, former Cy Young Award recipient Roy Halladay and unheralded Jesse Litsch. Former Oriole B.J. Ryan has 12 saves in 14 opportunities, but he took the loss yesterday against the New York Yankees. The Jays' offense is 11th in the AL in runs scored, and only the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals have hit fewer home runs. Journeyman Matt Stairs' seven homers lead the team.
