Player of the Year Sean Thompson Archbishop Curley
Thompson, a senior pitcher and first baseman, led the No. 5 Friars to an 21-8 record and third place in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference.
Thompson was 8-1, with his only loss coming to No. 1 Calvert Hall, and he had a 1.91 ERA. Thompson, a three- year starter, struck out 72 and walked 22 in 66 innings while giving up 51 hits.
He hit .305 with 21 runs scored, 26 RBIs and eight homers, including three in a game at No. 2 Archbishop Spalding. Thompson will play at High Point (N.C.) next year.
Coach of the Year Jack Thomas Archbishop Curley
Thomas turned an unranked 11-16 team last year into a contender in the MIAA A Conference. The Friars were 21-8 and finished third in the A Conference behind No. 1 Calvert Hall and No. 2 Archbishop Spalding.
Patience during last year's losing season enabled Thomas to bring along a strong group of seniors this year. He helped develop three-year players such as pitcher-first baseman Sean Thompson, catcher Brad Waltman, shortstop-pitcher Keith Fritz and infielder Mike O'Neill.
The Friars lost their first game in the MIAA double-elimination tournament to Mount St. Joseph, 9-3, but Thomas had his team regroup, and it won three straight to come within one game of the title, before losing to Spalding in the elimination game.
