Player of the year

Allyson Carey John Carroll

There isn't anything more Carey could have accomplished in her high school career.

A two-time All-Metro first-team selection, she led the Patriots to a second straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference crown, an unbeaten season and the No. 1 ranking. She also has a gold medal for helping the United States win the Under-19 world championship last summer.

While the senior midfielder led the Patriots with 52 goals and tied teammate Casey Ancarrow for the team lead in points (89), her offensive production wasn't her most important contribution. Carey excelled at winning possession. She dominated draws, forced turnovers at critical moments and came up with big ground balls. With so many talented teammates, she didn't need to - nor did she want to - take over.

"She's matured as a player in the sense that she doesn't feel she needs to score goals to be successful, where younger players feel they're only doing well if they're scoring or assisting," Patriots coach Krystin Porcella said. "Her job was the midfield and she accepted that role. First, it was the center draw and then go play offense and she's always thinking, 'Where does the team need me right now?' "

In the 11-6 title-game victory over No. 3 McDonogh, Carey handled all the draws, winning six herself and helping the team win 15 of the first 16.

"She's the most complete high school player I've ever gone against," McDonogh coach Chris Robinson said. "She has height, speed, quickness, hand-eye coordination, and on top of that, she has amazing field presence. She can see the whole field and she can anticipate what's going to happen."

Carey, the Harford County Player of the Year, was selected for the regional All-Tewaaraton Team and for the Under Armour All-America game on July 12 at Towson University. Next year, she will play at Vanderbilt.
