Mary Redmond is appointed business counselor

Mary Redmond has been appointed business counselor for the Maryland Small Business Development Center's satellite office at the Center for Business and Technology Development in Columbia.

She will provide counseling, technical assistance, training and guidance for startup entrepreneurs and expanding companies in Howard County.

She was project manager -- training and marketing director of the Small Business Development Center at Towson University.

The Small Business Development Center provides counseling and support to entrepreneurs and small to midsize businesses in Maryland. The Center for Business and Technology Development works to discover and nurture entrepreneurship in Howard County and the region through its Business Resource Center and NeoTech incubator.

Scharf named one of Top 100 Women

Rosa M. Scharf, senior vice president of Howard Bank, has been named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women for 2008 by The Daily Record.

Rhead receives lifetime award

Nancy Rhead, a longtime advocate for the Arc of Howard County, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization's second Volunteer Appreciation Social last month. Annette Hinkle was honored as the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.

Rhead first served on the board of the Arc in 1987 and was president during her term. She has served on many of the organization's committees and as a spokeswoman locally and in Annapolis.

Hinkel, treasurer and chairwoman of the organization's finance committee, is a charter member of the new Friendship Group, a social club of people served by the Arc and volunteers.

Awards were also given to Friendship Club member Ryan Griffin, as Outstanding Student Volunteer; Howard Bank Vice President and Relationship Manager Christa Spalding as Outstanding Community Volunteer; Sheila Greenfield, in charge of logistics for the Arc's Chocolate Ball, as special event volunteer; and Phil Kracofe, a member of the safety committee and volunteer house painter, as Outstanding Individual Volunteer.

Carole MacPhee of the Columbia Housing Corp. received an Outstanding Partnership Award, and Bon Secours was named Outstanding Volunteer Outreach Organization for sending 100 employees to work on two of the Arc's homes during its Day of Caring last spring.
