Evelyn U. Grissett, a retired Baltimore City Department of Education administrative secretary, died of a pulmonary embolism May 22 at her Chinquapin-area home in Northeast Baltimore. She was 61.
Born Evelyn Urquhart in Baltimore and raised on Caroline Street, she was a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, where she attended night-school classes.
A secretary, Mrs. Grissett began work at Center Stage and later worked at the Baltimore City Health Department headquarters and at Booker T. Washington Junior High School. She retired in 2007 from the school system's North Avenue headquarters.
She also enjoyed cooking family meals, trips to Atlantic City and reading her Bible.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bethel African-American Episcopal Church, 1300 Druid Hill Ave., where she was a member.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Raymond Grissett, a retired Maryland state trooper; two sons, Raymond Kirk Grissett Jr. of Clayton, Ga., and Rodney Keith Grissett of Baltimore; a brother, Clifton Urquhart of Baltimore; two sisters, Juanita Myers Johnson and Elaine Urquhart Douglass, also of Baltimore; and two grandsons.
