Carroll man injured in fire at his home

A Carroll County man was reported in serious condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center after a fire at his home yesterday afternoon, a spokesman for the state fire marshal's office said.

When firefighters from Carroll and Frederick counties entered the burning two-story frame house in the 7500 block of Middleburg Road in Detour about 1:30 p.m., they found Daniel Merchant, 47, lying on the dining room floor, Deputy Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo said.

Zurolo said Merchant, the lone occupant, apparently made the 911 call. The fire originated in the living room and was extinguished in less than an hour.

Zurolo said Merchant suffered smoke inhalation and was taken by an ambulance to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized. He was flown by a state police helicopter to Shock Trauma and placed into a hyperbaric chamber, which forces oxygen at higher than normal pressure into a patient's lungs.

Zurolo said the fire caused at least $100,000 in damage and that its cause is being investigated.
