Pair of accidents leave 3 dead, several hurt

Two accidents early yesterday - one involving two cars in eastern Baltimore County and the other involving two tractor-trailers on the Beltway in Anne Arundel County - left three men dead and several others injured, authorities said.

Two men died when a 2003 Lexus traveling west on Philadelphia Road in Rossville at a "high rate of speed" struck a 1990 Oldsmobile Ciera turning from Windsor Way shortly after 2 a.m., Baltimore County police said.

The driver of the Ciera and a passenger in the Lexus were killed, and the four other people in the Lexus were injured, said Bill Toohey, a Baltimore County police spokesman. The Oldsmobile caught fire after being struck by the Lexus, which crashed into a utility pole, he said.

Police identified the driver of the Ciera as Angelo Mark Whittington, 22, of the 5100 block of Goodnow Road in Northeast Baltimore and the Lexus passenger as Darik Anwar Lee, 27, of the 1000 block of Agate Drive in Edgewood. Lee was sitting behind the driver, police said.

The 23-year-old Lexus driver and three other passengers were treated for their injuries at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said. Their names were not released.

Five hours later, on the outer loop of the Beltway, near Exit 2 north of Glen Burnie, two tractor-railers collided in an accident that killed a truck driver and shut down that section of highway for more than three hours, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.

A preliminary investigation showed that a FedEx double tractor-trailer struck a single tractor-trailer from behind at 7:10 a.m., said Cpl. Jonathan Green, an MdTA police spokesman.

The FedEx driver died at the scene, and the other driver was taken to Harbor Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Green said. Their identities were not immediately available, police said.

Green said that investigators were hoping to speak with motorists who witnessed the accident. Witnesses may call investigators at 443-324-8894, he said.
