No. 7 Arundel tops Leonardtown, 1-0, in 4A East quarters

Yesterday was a good day to be a member of the Palmieri family.

Caitlyn Palmieri's seeing-eye single drove in Amanda Hedgepeth in the bottom of the eighth inning to give No. 7 Arundel (14-5) a 1-0 victory over Leonardtown in a Class 4A East regional softball quarterfinal. Angel Palmieri, Caitlyn's twin sister, advanced Hedgepeth to third with a sacrifice bunt.

Winning pitcher Kayla Martinez struck out 14 without a walk.

No. 5 Franklin 5, Hereford 4 -- Emily King singled home Nicole Snee in the bottom of the seventh as the Indians (20-0) outlasted the Bulls. King went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three. Winning pitcher Jordan Eades struck out 12.

No. 14 C. Milton Wright 11, Thomas Johnson 9, 8 inn. -- Sarah Morrill doubled home the eventual winning run as the Mustangs (12-8) held on to defeat the host Patriots. The Mustangs entered the seventh with a five-run lead but Thomas Johnson rallied to send the game to extra innings. With a runner on second in the eighth, Morrill lined a 1-2 pitch to left-center to put the Mustangs ahead. She later scored to give C. Milton Wright an insurance run and Mollie Coates pitched a perfect eighth to pick up the win in relief.


No. 10 Chesapeake-AA 5, Broadneck 3 -- Josh Grimes went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Cougars (14-6) past the Bruins. Winning pitcher Dylan Porter also drove in two runs and struck out five.

Glenelg 5, South Carroll 0 -- Steve Visnic tossed a one-hitter and knocked in two runs with a double as the Gladiators (12-6) beat the visiting Cavaliers. The senior right-hander struck out 10 and walked one in seven innings. The Gladiators broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third, beginning with Austin Siegfried's solo home run and continuing with Visnic's double.

Havre de Grace 3, Perryville 1 -- The Warriors (12-7) scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get past the Panthers (4-13) in a Class 1A North regional quarterfinal. Colyn Irvine started the scoring with a run-scoring single, followed by Travis Coakley's two-run single. Winning pitcher Jon Rogers threw a two-hitter while striking out seven.

Reservoir 3, Meade 2 -- Tyler Steele's two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the seventh led the Gators (10-10) past the Mustangs in a Class 3A East first-round matchup. John Ludke took a no-hitter into the fourth inning to pick up the win.

Girls lacrosse

Catonsville 13, C. Milton Wright 12 -- Lia Garman scored with just over three minutes left to give the Comets (10-6) a two-goal lead, and they held on to beat the visiting Mustangs in a Class 4A-3A South semifinal. Abbie Sneeringer scored three of her four goals in the second half as the Comets came back from three down.
