Man gets 18 months for assaulting girl, 13
A 27-year-old Prince George's County man was sentenced yesterday to 18 months in jail for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl during a sleepover in Annapolis last year.
Dwight Anthony Carter, 27, of Temple Hills pleaded guilty in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court to one count of third-degree sexual assault, part of a plea deal in which a more serious charge of second-degree rape was dropped.
Judge Paul A. Hackner accepted the plea deal and sentenced Carter to five years, with all but 18 months suspended, and five years' supervised probation. Carter is required to register as a sex offender.
On Jan. 13, 2007, the victim was sleeping over at a female classmate's house in the 900 block of Royal St. when Carter, the elder brother of the classmate, attacked the girl, said prosecutor Kimberly DiPietro.
The victim told her friend immediately but didn't tell her mother until last May. The crime was then reported to police. The Sun does not identify victims of sexual assaults.
Defense attorney Heather E. Tierney said her client, who thought the girl was older, contends that the sex was consensual.
