Eagles get another shot

The Baltimore Sun

Northeast played for a berth in the county championship game in the last regular-season game for the second year in a row and won again, this time beating Old Mill, 3-2, last night at Harry Lentz Field in Pasadena.

Last year, Northeast beat visiting Severna Park to clinch a title-game spot.

Two-time defending county champion and No. 4 Arundel (14-6) got past No. 10 South River, 4-1, in 11 innings yesterday to capture the regular-season title at 13-3.

Arundel will play Northeast at 7 p.m. Thursday at Joe Cannon Stadium for the county title.

Arundel edged Northeast, 3-1, in last year's final.

No. 11 Northeast (16-4), No. 7 Old Mill (14-5) and No. 15 Severna Park (13-5 with a win over Broadneck yesterday) all finished 12-4 in county play, but Northeast won the tiebreaker on the basis of most overall victories.

Brody Kean of Northeast and Joe Monar of Old Mill both pitched six-hitters last night, but Kean emerged the winner when the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the fifth as Kean hit into a double play.

Shortstop Glen Davis started the Eagles' fifth by reaching on the Patriots' fourth error of the game and later scored on the double play.

"Everything was working for me tonight," said Kean, who walked one and struck out three on 84 pitches.

"My fastball stayed low, my slider broke pretty hard, the curveball changed speeds and everything broke in nice. I loved the pressure."

First-year Northeast coach Adam Bolling said Kean is "a big-game pitcher."

Monar deserved a better fate. He struck out six and walked one on 103 pitches in six innings.

"We made a couple mistakes and the errors hurt us," Old Mill coach Mel Montgomery said. "And we didn't hit the ball the way we have all season and he [Kean] pitched a good ballgame."

Josh Rowe and Josh Emge had RBIs for Northeast. Andrew Haab and Matt Sharrock knocked in the Old Mill runs.
