Wine tasting to close anniversary events

The Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, has been celebrating its 25 years of service to Howard County senior citizens with 12 days of events. The center, which serves about 150 seniors each day, opened its doors in the Harper's Choice Village Center in 1983 as the Florence Bain Senior Center, welcoming about 25 seniors daily.

A wine tasting, the culmination of the month's celebration, is planned from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Daniel Wecker of The Elkridge Furnace Inn will present white varietals and light hors d'oeuvres. The cost is $20 and reservations are required.

Dancers, workshop at library

Dancers from the Misako Ballet Studio in Harper's Choice will perform at 7 p.m. May 6 at the Central Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway.

The library will offer a workshop, "Choose the Right Home Mortgage for You," at 7 p.m. May 7. The program will be presented by staff members from Provident Bank.

The library's new "Classics With Coffee" book club will discuss Frankenstein by Mary Shelley at 11 a.m. Saturday. Registration is not required.

"Spring into Science," a program for children ages 3-6 with an adult, will be offered at the library at 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays, May 6-27. The program explores simple scientific concepts and experiments inspired by children's literature. Registration begins Tuesday.

A "Children's Book Week Celebration," when children ages 3 and older can come disguised as their favorite children's book character, is offered at 2 p.m. May 16.

Free event features local singer

Singer-songwriter Iris Ann Hirsch will perform in the Oakland Nights Music Series from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the ballroom at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road.

Admission is free, although donations for the performer are appreciated.

The series, which is sponsored by Town Center Community Association, features performances by local musicians in an informal setting. Refreshments are available.

Boosters' golf tournament -- Wilde Lake High School's PTSA Boosters will sponsor its first golf tournament tomorrow at the Hobbit's Glen Golf Course. Breakfast, lunch, prizes and gifts will be provided. The costs are $125 for individual players, $450 for a foursome and $350-$4,000 for sponsorships. A sponsorship for nonplayers costs $100. Proceeds will be used for the after-prom party for graduating seniors, which provides a safe environment, free of alcohol and drugs, for students to continue celebrating after the dance.
