Basket bingo at Veterans Elementary

The Elkridge Hurricanes Football and Cheer organization will hold a basket bingo at 7 p.m. May 9 at Veterans Elementary School, 4355 Montgomery Road, Ellicott City. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

The fundraiser features Longaberger baskets and Southern Living products. Admission is $15 in advance; $20 at the door.

Race for Education set for Friday

St. Augustine School, 5990 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, will hold its fourth annual Race for Education from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Children in kindergarten through eighth grade will compete in an outdoor race around a 1/4 -mile course in the school's parking lot. The children will ask family members, friends and neighbors to sponsor each lap they run for a flat fee. Proceeds will help pay for improvements to the school.

The Rev. Gerard Bowen, pastor of St. Augustine Church, and Patricia Schratz, principal of St. Augustine School, will join in the race.

Library to hold audition workshop

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold an audition workshop for teens, ages 11-17, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 16.

The workshop, to be led by drama coach and director Mo Dutterer, will help teens prepare to compete in the library's Teen Idol contest. Participants will learn vocal techniques and will have their performances critiqued, if time permits. Bring recorded accompaniment, if available.

Free bridge, other games -- The Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center is offering a Bunco program for ages 55 and older, sponsored by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, and June 23, July 28 and Aug. 25. A $1 donation is requested.

A bridge group meets from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; pinochle meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Those who attend are invited to bring a bag lunch. Coffee, tea and treats will be provided. Donations are accepted for the snack fund.

Duplicate bridge is available from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays. Mah-jongg is played at the center from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Free.

A community service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis Wallas center. Learning English -- The county library's Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. Dig archaeology -- Students in fourth,-fifth-and-sixth grades are invited to participate in an archaeology dig at the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
