Humane Society to hold benefit

The Humane Society of Harford County will hold its fourth annual charity benefit, the Bow Wow Boogie, from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday at the Richlin Ballroom, 1700 Van Bibber Road, Edgewood.

The Bow Wow Boogie is a bull and oyster roast with open buffet featuring oysters shucked while you wait and a meat carving station. After dinner, a dessert buffet and make-your-own ice cream sundae bar are available. All beer, wine and sodas are included, with a cash bar for mixed drinks.

Live music will be provided by rock band Great Train Robbery.

A silent and live auction will be included, featuring donated items and gift. A Big Six Wheel and raffle will be available.

Sponsorships are available, and donations are being accepted.

Proceeds go toward providing food, shelter, medical care and a second chance for thousands of homeless and lost pets. The Humane Society of Harford County provides a haven for almost 6,000 animals annually.

Tickets are $45 each or $400 for a table of 10.

Essay contest for Mother's Day

Kathy Scilipoti's Cloud Nine Massage Therapy in Forest Hill is holding a Mother's Day Essay Contest.

Children under 18 are asked to write an essay on "My Mother Deserves a Cloud Nine Massage Getaway Because ... " Essays must be written by the child on notebook paper and be between 150 and 200 words.

Essays should include the child's name and age, mother's name, address, phone, and e-mail for contacting the winner. Essays may be hand-delivered or mailed to Cloud Nine Massage Therapy, 135 Industry Lane, Forest Hill, Md. 21050. Postmark and hand-delivery deadline is 6 p.m. April 28.

Judges will be the staff of Cloud Nine and Body Styles by Mel.

"We'll be looking for someone that goes above and beyond the norm ... a mother like no other ... someone who gives her all to everyone and wanting nothing in return," said Melvin K. Royster, president of Body Styles by Mel and contest judge.

The winning child's mother will receive a one-hour luxury massage of her choice from Cloud Nine; one month unlimited group fitness classes and a fitness assessment from Body Styles by Mel.

A getaway retreat for mothers

Moms Retreat is offering a getaway retreat for mothers and grandmothers from 10 a.m. to noon April 28 at the Abingdon library branch, 2510 Tollgate Road.

The event will feature reflexology from Jodie Johanason and a speaker discussing "Have more love and peace in your marriage."

Children are welcome to attend for crafts and games while mom relaxes.

Credit Union marks 55th year

Freedom Federal Credit Union recently celebrated its 55th anniversary at its annual meeting that included election of officers

Walter J. Davies, Jeff Eiseman and Michael Kaiser were re-elected to three-year terms on the board of directors.

Board officers for 2008-2009 include Robert Roddy Jr., chairman; and Hugo Biermann, vice chairman.

Freedom is a nonprofit, community-chartered, federal credit union offering consumer financial services to county residents.
