School board holds coffee, conversation
The Board of Education holds Coffee & Conversation sessions at schools throughout the county. These meetings provide community with an opportunity to share a cup of coffee and chat informally with board members.
The next session will be 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the media center at Murray Hill Middle School, 9989 Winter Sun Road in Laurel.
HCC sponsors Earth Day events
Howard Community College will sponsor a weeklong series of events tomorrow through Friday in observance of Earth Day, and a celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the college's Duncan Hall lobby.
Environmental organizations and organic stores and farms will be on hand. Those who attend can participate in a water taste-off, plant flowers and recycle plastic grocery bags. Leonardo DiCaprio's environmental film, The 11th Hour, will be shown at 12:30 p.m. in the Kittleman Room (ELB-100) and at 6 p.m. in the Burrill Galleria. Other environmentally themed films will be shown in ELB-100, starting at 11 a.m.
The HCC Environmental Club will demonstrate the impact of trash on Thursday with a Dumpster Dive on the HCC Quad, when a day's worth of campus trash will be on display. The club will plant native flowers on Friday.
The week's events, which are free and open to everyone, begin from noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow with "Consume Less: Live More," a program to increase awareness of the risks posed to the environment and financial stability by over-consumption. Also, the Baltimore Free Store will hold a mini-market.
The week's activities, which are open to the public, are sponsored by the HCC Environmental Club, the Division of Science and Technology and the Office of Student Life.

Wine tasting event benefits students
The Howard Community College Educational Foundation Inc. and Decanter Fine Wines will sponsor "Vino Scholastico," a tasting of distinctive international wines, to raise money for student scholarships.
The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday on the fourth floor of The Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall (RCF-400), 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.
Guests will have an opportunity to taste more than 50 fine wines, enjoy hors d'oeuvres, desserts and discounted prices for purchasing wines. Tickets are $75.

A raffle of a grand prize package trip to California wine country and other prizes will be drawn at the event. Raffle tickets are $50; three for $125. Only 500 tickets will be sold.
A pre-event tasting of Perrin Family wines will be held from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the Cafe on the Quad at the RCF building. Danny Haas of Vineyard Brands will present the wines. Tickets are $75.
Board of education to hold meeting
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 route 108, Ellicott City.
The afternoon session and an evening session, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will start with a public forum, when members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process.
