About 2,000 Baltimore City and Baltimore County school kids will be honored with finishers' medals at Towson University at 10 a.m. today for completing a 26.2-mile marathon during the last six months.
The youngsters, from kindergarteners to fifth graders, signed up for a free program run by Marathon Kids, an Austin, Texas-based nonprofit that prompted 115,000 kids nationwide to get off the couch and walk or run in the last year. Local sponsors include the University of Maryland Hospital for Children, CVS and Charm City Run.
The program was begun as a response to the increasingly sedentary ways of youth. With oversight from their school gym teachers, the local kids recorded each half- or quarter-mile walk or run in a log book and won little prizes along the way. They were also encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables.
The program is expected to return next year. For more information, go to marathonkids.org.
