Workshop to focus on heart ailments

In conjunction with the Columbia Association's "Get Active Howard County" program, the Town Center Community Association and Howard County Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition will sponsor a workshop by Dr. Michael Silverman, "Heart Disease -- Prevention and Treatment," from 7 p. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point road, Columbia.

The Howard County cardiologist will discuss risk factors and how to modify them. He will also describe the major cardiac medications used to treat risk factors.

NAMI plans fundraiser Sunday

The Howard County chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will sponsor a fundraising event, NAMIGames, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Cyberden computer gaming center, 6410 Dobbin Road, Columbia.

The event will feature gaming prizes and tournaments, including Brawl and GH2.

There is a $5 suggested donation. Proceeds will benefit NAMI Howard County.

The 2008 Maryland NAMIWalks For the Mind of America walkathon will be at 11 a.m. May 3 at Centennial Park in Ellicott City. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

There is no fee to participate, but walkers are encouraged to collect donations from family members, friends, co-workers and business associates.

Proceeds will be used to fund NAMI support, education, research and advocacy programs for the mentally ill in Maryland.
