Arundel baseball seems to be on a roll
After a 1-4 start, the Arundel baseball team has won five straight and leads the Anne Arundel County league.
The No. 9 Wildcats (6-4) are 5-1 in the county, a half-game up on No. 6 Chesapeake (6-2, 4-1). Five other county teams are 4-2: No. 8 South River (8-2), No. 10 Northeast (7-2), No. 13 North County (7-2), No. 12 Severna Park (6-3) and unranked Old Mill (6-3).
Arundel's winning streak started on April 2 with a 13-4 romp over Old Mill after a 5-1 loss to Chesapeake. Last week, the Wildcats went 4-0, defeating Meade, 12-3; Glen Burnie, 4-3; North County, 12-2 in five innings and Northeast, 3-2.
Arundel, which has won a state-record 10 state titles under coach Bernie Walter, has been getting solid pitching and defense and timely hitting. Four different pitchers got a win last week for Arundel: Connor Hibbs, Steve Jenkins, Tico Mendoza and Brooks Miller.
That pitching depth will be an asset when Arundel makes a run at county, regional and state titles.
Jenkins, Mendoza, Miller and Nick Elko have all been swinging the bat well for the Wildcats.
South River baseball -- Coach Ken B. Dunn said he believes he has "the best team" he has had in 31 years in Edgewater. "We've decided this is a marathon and not a sprint," said Dunn, who led the Hawks to a state final in 1983. "They have really done a good job in the sprint department, but we've got to make this marathon." Dunn is pleased with his pitching, especially junior Eric Aumann, who three-hit then-No. 9 Northeast for a 3-1 win last week and is off to a 4-0 start. "Eric has been outstanding with an ERA around 1.00 pitching big games for us," Dunn said. "Northeast is a pretty darned good ball club, and he stifled their bats."
