Yook Lee, former owner of a West Baltimore restaurant who had also been active in several Chinese business organizations, died of heart failure April 6 at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. He was 86 and lived in Phoenix, Baltimore County.
Mr. Lee was born and raised in Taishan, China, and later learned the restaurant business while living in Hong Kong.
He left Hong Kong before World War II and settled in San Francisco. He later later moved to Sacramento, Calif., and Las Vegas before coming to Baltimore in 1954.
Mr. Lee owned and operated the Canton Restaurant, a family-style restaurant in the 1300 block of Edmondson Ave., for nearly 40 years until retiring in the early 1990s.
Mr. Lee had been president, vice president and treasurer of the On Leong Chinese Merchants Association of Baltimore, and had been chairman of the Baltimore Lee's Benevolent Association.
He was an avid Orioles fan.
Services were Saturday.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Chui Fung; three sons, Kang B. Lee of Gaithersburg, Kang Sun Lee of Houston and Lawrence Lee of Phoenix, Baltimore County; and five grandchildren.
