The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service has announced that the application period for the 2008 Conservation Security Program will be held from Friday to May 16.
Maryland has one watershed eligible to participate in the Conservation Security Program this year -- the Gunpowder-Patapsco Watershed, which covers most of Baltimore County, about half of Harford and Carroll counties, and a small part of Anne Arundel and Howard counties.
The Conservation Security Program is a voluntary program that supports stewardship of private agricultural lands by providing payments for maintaining and enhancing natural resources.
About half of the 1,600 agricultural landowners and farmers in the watershed are being contacted with information about meetings and applications for the program.
Individuals interested in applying for the Conservation Security Program should attend an information meeting to determine eligibility. Meetings in Harford/Baltimore counties will be held as follows:
Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Oregon Ridge Nature Center & Park, 13555 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville.
Thursday at 7 p.m. at Level Fire Hall, 3633 Level Road, Havre de Grace.
