Charles "Shang" Goodwin III, a retired private school educator, died of pancreatic cancer Tuesday at his Guilford home. He was 84.

Mr. Goodwin was born in Baltimore and raised in Guilford. He was a Gilman School graduate and earned a bachelor's degree in history from Brown University in 1947.

He taught fifth grade at Gilman from 1947 to 1957, and in 1959 was named headmaster of the Meadowbrook School in Weston, Mass.

In 1969, Mr. Goodwin returned to Baltimore, where he taught fifth grade at Boys' Latin School until retiring in 1971.

He enjoyed sailing and spending summers in Quissett, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. Mary's Seminary and University School of Theology and Ecumenical, 5400 Roland Ave.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, the former Charlotte Moseley Ober-Lord; two stepsons, Mason F. Lord Jr. of Sherman, Conn., and Hambleton D. Lord of Wellesley, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Charlotte Lord of Reading, Mass., and Rebekah L. Lord of Weston, Mass.; a sister, Emily G. Kemp of Omaha, Neb.; and eight step-grandchildren.
