A Baltimore development company made the winning $1.9 million bid on a slice of Baltimore County-owned land in the heart of Towson at an auction yesterday.
The six-tenths-of-an-acre property, left over from the construction of Towsontown Boulevard, includes one of two historic railroad bridge abutments flanking York Road. Longwood Development LLC bid $1,955,000 on the land, said Shirley Murphy, chief of the county's Bureau of Land Acquisition.
Because the bid is equal to the lesser of two appraisals on the property, the County Council must approve the sale, Murphy said.
The county declared the property surplus after being approached by Longwood Development, which is interested in using a sliver of the parcel to build a residential and office tower near the cul-de-sac at West Susquehanna Avenue, county officials said. The company owns a nearby office building, according to tax records.
Some community leaders are questioning the decision to sell, for the sake of development, open space at the entrance to Towson's downtown.
A historic stone railroad bridge abutment that once supported the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad line over York Road is at the edge of the parcel.
