Severn boys edge Comets

The Baltimore Sun

After 35 minutes of play, the No. 11 Severn boys lacrosse team looked as if it had little to worry about in its game against Catonsville. The Admirals had built a comfortable four-goal lead.

Eight minutes and three Comets goals later, and it looked as if they had a good chance of being upset. Midfielder Nick Verklin and his Admirals teammates knew what they had to do, though.

"We had to stay calm," Verklin said. "They came back hard, but we had to play good defense and put in a couple more goals."

Verklin scored an unassisted goal with five minutes left, and the Admirals were able to hold off Catonsville, 6-5, at home.

"We played well in spurts," Severn coach Brian Wood said. "We turned the ball over a few too many times, which cost us some possessions, but we came out with the win. I'll take the win any day of the week."

Verklin scored two goals and his brother, Matt Verklin, had a goal and an assist for the Admirals (6-3). Matt Reymann led Catonsville (1-2) with a goal and an assist.

No. 3 Centennial 13, Long Reach 0 -- Ben Winter threw his second no-hitter of the season and had two doubles for the visiting Eagles (4-0).

No. 6 Archbishop Curley 12, No. 12 Gibbons 7 -- Keith Fritz went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs to power the visiting Friars (3-0) past the Crusaders in nine innings. Archbishop Curley scored five runs in the top of the ninth to break a 7-7 tie. Left-hander Norm Cushing pitched four innings of relief for the win.

Poly 12, Carver 0 -- Jonathan Cleary threw a no-hitter, walking two and striking out five in five innings for the visiting Engineers.

No. 8 Hammond 6, Mount Hebron 0 -- Stephanie Speierman struck out 18 in seven innings of no-hit ball for the host Bears (4-1). It was Speierman's second no-hitter this season and she was just a hit batsman away from a perfect game. Kayla Hunley led the offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
